"Put Patients first" - Julia Goldsworthy MP calls for protection of GP Dispensing services

1.00.00pm GMT Mon 24th Nov 2008

A consultation that could affect the future of GP dispensing services across Cornwall closed on Friday.

Local MP Julia Goldsworthy highlighted the concerns raised by many that changes could lead to a reduction in access to this important service - particularly in rural areas, and paid tribute to the many hundreds of people who had written express their views.

There are currently many confusing elements to the current dispensing service, which leaves some surgeries able to dispense to some patients but not others. The consultation has been presented as an opportunity to address these problems, but many rural dispensing surgeries are worried that it could threaten their future altogether.

In her response to the consultation process, Julia raised her concerns that the government's proposals will disproportionately favour large pharmacies, while access to services locally are diminished. In her submission, Julia pressed the Health Minister to reassure her constituents that any changes made will be driven by the needs and best interests of the patients who stand to be most directly affected.

Commenting, Julia said:

"I have been contacted by a large number of patients and GPs who feel very worried that any changes to the dispensing services available to GP surgeries would reduce their ability to pick up their prescriptions locally.

"Measures to reduce some of the anomalies is needed - but the government need to be clear that any changes will be in the best interests of patients, and will improve access to services, not make it worse. I will do all I can to ensure that both the Health Minister and the Primary Care Trust will ensure that the needs of the rural areas are not overlooked."
